SOUTH CAROLINA TEENS

  • 24.4% of SC high school students and 11.2% of middle school students smoke
  • 13.8% of SC’s male high school smokers use smokeless or spit tobacco
  • 6,500 SC kids become daily smokers each year
  • 21.3 million boxes of cigarettes are bought and smoked by SC teens each year
  • 90,000 SC kids who are now under 18 will ultimately die prematurely from smoking

HORRY COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT
Horry County has just one school district which serves over 34,000 students.  The school district consists of nine high schools, nine middle schools, 24 elementary schools, two career centers and an alternative school. (Visit the district web site)

The South Carolina School Board Association in collaboration with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control endorses the adoption of policies that address preventing tobacco use within schools.
